One of the Nation’s Fastest Growing Mobile Services Brings Fast WiFi and Cutting-Edge Connectivity to Philadelphia’s World-Class Sports and Entertainment Venue

PHILADELPHIA – May 6, 2025

Comcast Spectacor and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) today announced the world-class sports and entertainment venue in South Philadelphia – the current home of the National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers, National Basketball Association’s Philadelphia 76ers, college basketball, premier global concerts, and entertainment events – will be renamed Xfinity Mobile Arena, effective September 1, 2025, through the 2030-2031 season.

Xfinity Mobile is one of the fastest-growing wireless services in the country and the only provider in its markets to deliver gig speeds to customers seamlessly inside and outside of the home. Comcast first launched Xfinity Mobile to consumers across the nation from its hometown of Philadelphia in 2017 and will be bringing the brand’s unmatched experience to one of the most storied venues in the country.

As part of this partnership with Comcast Spectacor and HBSE, Xfinity Mobile will bring cutting-edge WiFi capabilities to the arena so fans stay connected from the tailgate to the concourse. Xfinity Mobile customers will automatically join a supercharged WiFi experience in the arena that will deliver lightning-fast speeds with Comcast’s WiFi PowerBoost feature, all at no extra cost. Fans will be able share photos, videos, and stream with friends and family as they experience their favorite moments and action in the arena.

“Philadelphia is home to the most passionate fans in the country, and that competitive spirit is a perfect complement to the Xfinity Mobile brand,” said Steve Croney, Chief Operating Officer, Connectivity & Platforms, Comcast. “Xfinity Mobile is fueled by the largest and fastest WiFi network in America which will give our Philadelphia fans an unrivaled experience at one of Philadelphia’s legendary sports and entertainment venues.”

Since opening its doors in 1996, the Philadelphia arena has hosted the most influential sports moments and entertainment acts in the region over the last three decades. In addition to being the home of NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, NLL’s Philadelphia Wings, and Villanova Men’s Basketball – the arena continues to be one of the industry’s busiest venues and hosts the top touring musical and entertainment acts in the world. This includes iconic events such as NCAA Championships, record-breaking musical tours, family and entertainment events including WWE and Disney on Ice, and both Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

“This arena is an anchor in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex and broader region,” said Dan Hilferty, Chairman & CEO of Comcast Spectacor. “As we complete our historic relationship with Wells Fargo, we wanted to ensure that our new partner matched our enthusiasm for delivering world-class service to our fans and guests. We are committed to continuing investing in our venue to ensure we’re at the forefront of technology, innovation, and cutting-edge fan experiences. We couldn’t be more excited that Xfinity Mobile’s brand will become the centerpiece for sports and entertainment in Philadelphia.”

After the completion of its multi-year $400 million+ transformation last year, every inch of the venue has been completely reimagined. The project produced full upgrades and overhauls to the fan experience, technology, food and beverage, seating options, performer amenities, sightlines, and sustainability. Ranked in the top 10 worldwide by Front Office Sports and the top 10 in the US by Pollstar, the arena is recognized as a premiere venue for fan experience and hosts over 220 events and 2.5 million guests annually.

“Alongside our partners at Comcast and Comcast Spectacor, we have a shared vision of strengthening the home court advantage in South Philadelphia, and this announcement is another step in an exciting new chapter together,” said Tad Brown, CEO of the Philadelphia 76ers and HBSE. “Xfinity Mobile Arena will offer fans enhanced connectivity and high-speed capabilities to maximize their in-arena experience. By focusing on new and emerging technology, Xfinity Mobile Arena will allow fans to create incredible memories at games, concerts and live events in the future.”

Agreement Terms & Timing

The Xfinity Mobile partnership is set to begin on September 1, 2025, with installation of new signage to be revealed on September 2, 2025. The partnership will run through the 2030-2031 season and include exterior branding, interior digital signage, inclusion in advertising, branded WiFi, hospitality and Official Partnerships with the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers.

As previously announced, Comcast will own the naming rights to the arena being developed via a joint venture between HBSE and Comcast Spectacor, set to open in the 2031-2032 season. Details will be announced at a later date.

Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Comcast Spectacor Announce Joint Venture to Build World-Class Arena In South Philadelphia As Well As Revitalize Market East

Partnership Will Create New Home for Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers, and Venue for Top Touring Acts and Special Events

PHILADELPHIA, PA — January 13, 2025

Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) and Comcast today announced that HBSE and Comcast Spectacor have entered into a binding agreement to form a 50-50 joint venture to build a world-class, state-of-the-art arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex that will be the new home of the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers.

Slated to open in 2031, with the potential to accelerate to an earlier date, the new facility will be one of the finest, most technologically advanced, and sustainable sports and entertainment arenas in the country. In addition, the partnership will include a 50-50 venture to invest in the revitalization of Market East in Center City.

By committing to both investments, the partnership will create thousands of jobs, generate billions of dollars in economic activity for the city, region and state, and enhance commitments to create economic opportunity in neighborhoods across Philadelphia. In addition, Comcast is planning to take a minority stake in the 76ers and will join with HBSE to bid to bring a WNBA team to the city.

“This is a great day for Philadelphia and the fans of our storied sports franchises,” said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation. “We are grateful to Mayor Parker and Governor Shapiro for their leadership and are thrilled to work together to develop the premier sports and entertainment destination in the nation that will benefit the region for decades to come.”

“From the start, we envisioned a project that would be transformative for our city and deliver the type of experience our fans deserve. By coming together with Brian and Comcast, this partnership ensures Philadelphia will have two developments instead of one, creating more jobs and real, sustainable economic opportunity,” said HBSE’s Josh Harris, David Blitzer, and David Adelman. “We are grateful to Mayor Parker, Council President Johnson, Council Member Squilla, Governor Shapiro, our partners in labor and the many community and business leaders who supported us throughout this process. This is a massive win for our fans and for the city.”

“Today’s announcement is great news for the City of Philadelphia,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “I greatly appreciate the leadership of Mayor Parker and Governor Shapiro and the willingness of HBSE and Comcast to join forces, the result of which will be a world-class arena for 76ers and Flyers fans, with opportunities for more teams to come.”

“We’re thrilled to see Comcast Spectacor and HBSE unite to deliver a new state-of-the-art arena in South Philadelphia. For the past 58 years, in both the Spectrum and Wells Fargo Center, those arenas and Flyers’ fans have consistently produced an atmosphere that is among the best in sports. This visionary and forward-looking facility will take the fan experience to a whole new level where the great pride and passion of Philadelphia sports fans will continue to be on full display,” said Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner.

The new arena partnership is a joint venture with equal board representation and an HBSE representative serving as the Chair. Comcast will have the naming rights to the venue. HBSE and Comcast will also immediately focus on Market East, bringing together government officials and local stakeholders to develop a variety of options to revitalize a vital neighborhood in Center City where the 76ers had originally proposed locating the arena.

“We firmly believe we are better working together for Philadelphia,” said Dan Hilferty, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor. “This new arena will complement other exciting developments in the area, including Comcast Spectacor’s and the Philadelphia Phillies’ plans to create the country’s top sports and entertainment district. We will all work closely together to create an unmatched experience for the fans while developing a vibrant mixed-use district that serves our community.”

Comcast Spectacor Shares Economic Impact Analysis

Comcast Spectacor logo

Comcast Spectacor, a leading sports and entertainment company, today shared a third-party economic impact analysis, the Hunden Study, that assesses the market capacity and outcomes of a second arena in the City of Philadelphia. Hunden Partners, a real estate development advisory firm, based its analysis and projections on publicly available information known about the 76Place project – including research resources and data – the current marketplace, and regional- and macro-economic conditions.

“We felt a deep responsibility to share this report to ensure we all have the full resources at our disposal to make the right decisions about our City’s future,” said Dan Hilferty, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Spectacor. “We firmly believe that the best outcome for our fans and the community is the 76ers and Comcast Spectacor, united and based in South Philadelphia. To that end, we continue to offer the 76ers a 50/50 partnership of the Wells Fargo Center and have been clear that we’re open to building a new arena together at the right time. The door will always be open for the 76ers and we sincerely hope together we can create a vision for what’s best for Philadelphia.”

A copy of the Hunden Study can be found here.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Hunden Partners (Hunden) was engaged to analyze the likely impacts on the City and County of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of the proposed 76 Place Project, a dedicated NBA basketball arena for the Philadelphia 76ers. The following summarize the key findings from the report:

Headlines

  • Cost: Estimates are low as costs are only rising & infrastructure needs will push higher. New NBA/NHL venues cost $1+ Billion and this number continues to increase. The initial cost of $1.3B has risen to $1.6-$1.9B due to a number of factors including inflation, cost of labor market, urban setting, raised event floor and others. This cost may be even higher when necessary SEPTA improvements and general Center City infrastructure improvements are incorporated.
  • Content: There isn’t sufficient content to support two buildings. Other markets with multiple major arenas have divided up the concert/family show market, which reduces the number of events, revenue per event and viability of each venue. Ultimately the lack of events and net revenue reduces the value of the venue and in turn, creates a long-term reliance on public tax dollars for upgrades to stay competitive.
  • Comparable Markets: No comparable markets have two arenas in the same city. No other market other than New York or Los Angeles (which are much larger than Philadelphia) has more than one major arena in the city. Major arenas in other markets, when there is more than one, are disbursed in different cities, typically 10 – 30 miles away from each other.
  • City Revenues: Limited incremental revenue with ~6% increase in tax revenue from baseline. For markets of similar size, the average taxpayer subsidy is 46%, or ~$600 million for a $1.6+ billion project. The estimated economic value, or impact, of 76 Place to the City/County of Philadelphia over 30 years is $134 million, or a present value of $63 million. Any taxpayer contribution to the project of more than $63 million negates any positive impact.
  • Cash Flows: Do not support positive return on private funding. Projected arena cash flows for 76 Place support a valuation of $545 million. The cash flows were based on current revenues of the team, as well as concerts and family shows at Wells Fargo Center (WFC), along with the requisite expenses. Existing performance at WFC and comparable national arenas were used to estimate both revenues and expenses. This suggests a necessary subsidy, private debt guarantee, or taxpayer support of approximately $800 million if 76 Place costs $1.6+ billion.
  • Long-Term Viability: Limited cash flows suggest public funding likely required to maintain long-term viability & maintenance needs. By splitting the revenues flowing from one arena to two, it is expected that both major league arenas would not be able to self-fund major renovations and improvements, requiring taxpayer funding on a regular basis (every 15-20 years). Recently, the Wells Fargo Center has been able to privately finance a $400 million major redevelopment without public funding in order to keep the venue at top quality. Going forward, the value of each arena will be less than half (-58%) versus the current value and impact of one arena. Over 30 years, the public cost to keep both venues viable is easily hundreds of millions of public taxpayer dollars. These taxpayer costs are substantially higher than any minor benefit in added concert and event activity.

Positive Impacts

  • City Revenue: It is expected that 76 Place would drive negligible growth in city tax revenue (~6% through 8-12 new entertainment events annually in the City) from a minimal increase in new spending to Philadelphia from those coming from outside the market to spend time and money (and generate taxes) in the City.
  • Population Base: Center City has seen a resurgence in the past 15 years, with many more people living and working in the area. Many of these residents and employees have higher incomes and ability to spend on entertainment at a new arena, as well as at restaurants, bars and retailers before and after games.
  • Post-Pandemic Recovery: Center City is located in the central business district of Philadelphia, and prior to the pandemic contained nearly 50,000 residents, 146,000 non-resident workers and 221,000 visitors on a daily basis. However, post-pandemic, according to the State of Center City Philadelphia 2023 report, Center City has only recovered to 84% of pre-pandemic levels. With so many working from home, the non-resident workforce is currently only 66% recovered, which has significantly impacted spending in the Center City. On the flip side, many of the urban residents may be working from home versus commuting out of Center City. 76 Place will likely provide a resurgence in activity to Center City.

Negative Impacts

  • Traffic Congestion: The streets approaching and adjacent to 76 Place are narrow, many with just one lane in each direction. Gridlock is likely before and after events. Additionally, Interstates 95 and 76 commonly have traffic during rush hour, which is when attendees would be traveling to games.
  • Parking: With no dedicated parking garage, 76 Place will rely on numerous existing office building parking garages to accommodate 4,700 cars per game. Attendees will need to navigate both the traffic and parking complexities, walking up to a half mile. For many who are used to the easy in/out at Wells Fargo Center, this will be a hurdle they may not be willing to make, which will negatively impact attendance at events.
  • Cultural Influences: A major concern for the residents of Chinatown is gentrification. They fear rising real estate costs and the loss of family-owned businesses in the community.

Wells Fargo Center Recognized As One Of “Best Venues 2024” By Front Office Sports

Wells Fargo Center lit up at night

Philadelphia’s premier venue for sports and entertainment one of only 10 venues in the world to receive the award.

The newly transformed Wells Fargo Center is receiving global recognition after completing its multi-year, $400 million renovation project. Front Office Sports, the leading media and news organization covering the business of sports, today released their 2024 slate of “Best Venues” with South Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center making the list of just 10 venues in the world that includes stadiums, arenas, racing and other mixed-used venues.

The award honors venues that have met and exceeded the evolving demands of fans while setting the new industry standard for success. Venues were evaluated by Front Office Sports in collaboration with Sports Innovation Lab on several criteria including new technologies that improve the guest experience, exciting and engaging menu items, design features and mixed-use development opportunities. Other winners include Churchill Downs Racetrack (Louisville), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), Citi Field (New York) and Moody Center (Austin).

“As we completely transformed this iconic venue, we always had one goal: to elevate and enhance the fan experience,” said Dan Hilferty, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor. “We share this recognition with everyone who made the transformation possible including the building trades, carpenters, our employees and our fans. The completion of the renovation project is only the beginning of our reimagining of the Sports Complex, and we look forward to game-changing redevelopment in partnership with the Phillies.”

In addition to hosting its main sports tenants of the Philadelphia Flyers, 76ers, Wings and Villanova Basketball, the arena regularly attracts the top touring acts in music, comedy and family entertainment. Wells Fargo Center hosts approximately 220 events per year and continues to hold the biggest cultural moments in the Philadelphia region including the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games, and WWE events during WrestleMania 40. Top performers in just the last two years include Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Madonna, Kevin Hart, Bad Bunny, the Jonas Brothers, Aerosmith, Nate Bargatze, Drake and Zach Bryan.

“For over three decades, we’ve booked the biggest and best touring acts and events in both sports and entertainment, continually raising the bar as a must-play venue,” said Phil Laws, Chief Operating Officer of Comcast Spectacor. “As we come out of our transformation, we’re more committed than ever to keep evolving, embracing new ideas, and advancing every guests’ experience for years to come. This recognition really encapsulates all the hard work from our team each and every day to make Wells Fargo Center one of the best venues in the industry.”

The Wells Fargo Center’s transformation included the following:

  • Wells Fargo Center’s transformation dates back to 2016 when the venue overhauled the Suite Level following the Democratic National Convention.
  • The Mezzanine Level got a total makeover in 2018 with new and expanded food and beverage options, concourse layouts with skyline views, over 150 new LED game-action screens and upgraded points of sale.
  • 2019 proved to be the busiest year of the project and saw a full overhaul of the main concourse and introduced an expansive food hall style market and a bistro meets marketplace complete with a “Grab & Go” food and beverage boutique. That year the arena also debuted its first court and rink side club, the Shift4 Club, which provides guests an exclusive all-inclusive experience with easy access to the best seats in the house.
  • In 2022, the new Club Level was unveiled with open concepts and design honoring Philadelphia’s rich sports and entertainment past while showcasing the newest technologies, world-class dining options and curated bar and shopping experiences. To cap off the interior renovations, the venue completely reimagined the Event Level which included new, modern locker rooms and other world-class amenities for teams and performers. Other upgraded amenities include weight and cardio rooms, state-of-the-art medical facilities including a trauma center, and top-of-the-line family spaces for both teams to create a home and away from home for top talent.
  • Earlier this year, the final phase of the project showcased exterior upgrades which included the addition of three massive LED digital boards, customizable strut lighting, and three entry pavilions for ease of entry for all guests.
  • A major theme and constant throughout the transformation was investment in the latest technology in order to elevate the guest experience. The arena introduced the world’s first 4K kinetic scoreboard, Wi-Fi and connectivity enhancements, cutting-edge game presentation and audio systems, an $11 million HVAC system, frictionless security technology, concession mobile ordering, and much more.
